About Me

Matt's working life is all about creating kinder, fairer, more productive workplaces. He is an inspirational facilitator and a highly effective coach, a passionate advocate of inclusive management, workplace diversity and workplace mediation.

Matt challenges everyone he works with to focus on their accountability, to explore their and other people's perspectives and to develop the skills they need to shape their workplace. Employee engagement is a tool both to improve organisational performance and to manage employment risk.

Once a leading employment lawyer with an FMCG marketing background, Matt's reputation for leading the market in employment risk training was formed at Simmons & Simmons from 1998 - 2003.

The consultancy byrne.dean was created in 2003. Matt’s vision for byrne·dean was to bring together some of the highest quality practitioners in a dynamic organisation that would make a real difference in workplaces.

Matt works with increasingly senior people globally (he has worked with people in 24 different legal jurisdictions) and has broadened his expertise away from employment law and employment relations to encompass diversity and inclusion, cross-cultural communication and cultural and behavioural change.

Matt chaired the Training Sub-Committee of the Employment Lawyers Association between 2002 and 2006. Matt was Chair of Islington Law Centre (formerly North Islington Law Centre) from 1999 to 2005 where he had worked as a volunteer and member of the employment unit since 1991.
